Cholesterol OMG Presentation – The Innocent Bystander

Here is a link to the Cholesterol OMG PowerPoint in .pdf format.

Watch our Cholesterol OMG presentation and see how saturated fat consumption improves cholesterol and health as is discussed in Time magazine’s cover story, Ending the War on Fat, and by registered dietitian Joy Bauer in her NBC Today show segment. I’m amazed to see mainstream now discussing advanced lipid testing including cholesterol size and quality!

Our presentation takes an entertaining look at the history of cholesterol and cardiovascular disease and includes patient examples. We discuss cholesterol, cardiovascular risk assessment and non-standard high-quality nutrient dense diets that are lower in carbohydrate, higher in saturated fat, and higher in food quality to improve inflammatory markers, cholesterol quality, and health. Examples include Low carb high fat (LCHF), Paleo, Primal and Weston A. Price diets.

In our office, we perform standard and advanced lipid testing including total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, triglycerides, LDL-P, small-LDL-P, sdLDL, ApoB, and particle size.  There are several companies who perform these tests including Cleveland Heart Labs, NMR Liposcience, Berkeley Heart Labs, VAP, and Health Diagnostic Labs.  We also perform or order cardiovascular imaging studies including carotid intima media thickness, limited carotid doppler, and calcium scores.

We’d enjoy discussing the new ACC, AHA, NHLBI cholesterol guidelines with you in our office and also address your personal concerns regarding medication, statins, and to further explore the inflammatory and oxidative components of cardiovascular disease.

Lathe and Eric from Carb-Loaded invited me to do a Google+ video hangout. We discussed diet, inflammation, oxidative stress, cholesterol and cardiovascular disease risk assessment. Do you think Cholesterol is the Innocent Bystander?

The diet-heart hypothesis and the lipid hypothesis have given dietary cholesterol and dietary saturated fat a bad name over the years. However the question remains, how does dietary saturated fat and cholesterol influence blood cholesterol, lipids and lipoproteins anyway? Is blood cholesterol solely responsible for the development of atherosclerotic plaque and heart disease or are there other factors such as inflammation and oxidative stress at play?

Lipidology and Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessment including, Blood Lipids, Cholesterol, Triglycerides to HDL ratios, and advanced lipoprotein analysis. Advanced testing including LDL-Particle Count, ApoB, LDL-Particle size, sd-LDL, Lpa, Inflammation and Oxidative Stress determination. We contract with the following labs: Berkeley Heart Lab, NMR Liposcience, HDL Health Diagnostics Lab and Cleveland Heart Lab IT. In house Carotid-IMT testing using VasoLabs is also available.

Cholesterol, or more specifically lipoprotein testing, will remain an important determinant of cardiovascular risk. However, once you or your doctor understands how inflammation and oxidative stress play pivotal roles in the development of atherosclerosis and plaque formation, cholesterol interpretation becomes a whole new ball game!

Listen to the original audio of my one hour interview with Jimmy Moore of Livin La Vida LowCarb Blog, the LLVLC Show (Episode 715) that was used for his upcoming book Cholesterol Clarity: What The HDL Is Wrong With My Numbers?. I am one of 29 expert contributors for the book which will be released to the public next week.

Just as our conversation gets more interesting the audio quality and internet connection deteriorate some. Bear with it, as the key content comes toward the end.

Jimmy is one those rare individuals that, despite doing everything right in terms of lifestyle, nutrition and reducing oxidative stress, his LDL-C as well as other advanced cardiovascular markers like LDL-P and ApoB are on the rise. Most mainstream-minded physicians would consider this unfavorable, but these findings have less significance in Jimmy’s case, especially when considering the complete metabolic picture. Listen to us discuss the results and implications, providing insight into this fascinating topic.
